Christmas Decorating on a Budget
Christmas is one of the busiest seasons of the year. With all the gift-buying in preparation for celebrations, it’s easy to get sidetracked and spend more than originally intended. When it comes to decorating homes, there is no need to go overboard to create a festive atmosphere! With a few clever ideas, you can spruce up your home in time for the holiday season – and without spending too much. Here are ideas on Christmas decorating on a budget.
Recycle last year's decorations
You don’t have to replace your Christmas decorations every year in order to have fabulous trimmings for Christmas. This year, breathe new life into your old Christmas ornaments by repurposing them. Christmas balls may be used as colorful table centerpieces. Take a handful of these ornaments, place them in apothecary jars or big vases, and you’ve got yourself a beautiful collection of baubles for a Christmas vignette. You can also secure them to garlands and wreaths to give these home embellishments a pop of color.
Another excellent (and inexpensive!) idea is to use your candles from last year to adorn dining tables and mantles. Place candles on glass tumblers filled with colorful candies, and voila! You have a no-fuss, colorful table centerpiece.
Draw inspiration from nature
Take a walk around your neighborhood and you’ll be surprised at how many natural Christmas decorations are available for the taking. Get a few dried branches and spray paint them in white, silver or gold, and you have instant filler for your vase. Gather some pine cones and place them in a bowl or hang them on your artificial Christmas trees.
You can also make your own garlands, swags and wreaths from fresh evergreens. Although this requires some craft skills and time, it’s an effort worth doing all in the spirit of Christmas. Festoon your handmade decorations with real berries and you’ve got yourself a thrifty DIY Christmas décor that you can be proud of!
Go treasure hunting
Flea markets are a downright heaven for thrifters. You can get plenty of inspiration for your holiday décor from flea market finds. It takes a quick and trained eye to spot the treasures, but anyone can find good stuff if they are patient enough. Once you have chosen your pieces, clean them, glue them if needed and spray paint them to make them look like brand new. You can also revive old stuff by making a decoupage or by gluing colored paper in different patterns.
